Private Sector Acceptance is demonstrated by almost all major commercial health insurance carriers by including chiropractic in
their private policies. Most major industrial employers and a significant number of international, national and local unions provide for
chiropractic care in their health and welfare plans.
Chiropractic treatment by hand is the second largest healing profession in the world. It is a discipline
of health care which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use
of drugs or surgery. A Doctor of Chiropractic views the patient as an integrated being and focuses on the
relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and biomechanical function (as coordinated by the
nervous system), and how that relationship affect the preservation and restoration of health, as the key to
overall health and wellness.
Chiropractic doctors give special attention to spinal mechanics, vascular, neurological, muscular and
nutritional relationships. The primary treatment performed by the chiropractor is the spinal manipulation
or adjustment, in which pressure is applied to an area of the spine having joint dysfunction. Secondary
attention focused upon the associated musculature may allow for increased mobility and flexibility. The
result is reduced pain and inflammation, and restored function of the area.
State Licensing and Authorization occurs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Each
state or district officially recognizes chiropractic as a health care profession and authorize treatment as part of their workmen's
compensation programs. About 90% require chiropractic services be included in all commercial health and accident policies written in
those states.
Federal Authorization and Recognition provide that chiropractic services be recognized by Medicare, Medicaid and Vocational
Rehabilitation Programs, and are listed as a medical deduction under the internal revenue code. Federal employee chiropractic treatment
is authorized by employee workmen's compensation programs, the Postmasters Benefit Programs and Mail Handlers Benefit Program, and
is also approved for veteran's training.
Legislation has been passed approving and licensing the practice of chiropractic in all U.S. states.
Chiropractors are authorized to:
* Provide primary care through direct patient contact
* Formulating diagnoses
* Using diagnostic x-rays and laboratory tests
* Providing physical therapy services
Chiropractic Education is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education via the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE), the
accrediting organization for chiropractic colleges and a member of the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation (COPA) and the Council
of Specialized Accrediting Agencies (CSAA).
To earn a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, a candidate must have a minimum of two years' pre-professional college education, with a
concentration in the basic and biological sciences, with an additional four years of resident instruction at a chiropractic college. In most
states, candidates for licensure must qualify under equivalent basic science examinations as those required for medical and osteopathic
physicians. More than 95% of the state chiropractic examining boards require an applicant for licensure examination to be a graduate
from a chiropractic college having status with the CCE.
Getting to the Root of the Problem. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and
nerves. The brain is divided into sections, and receives and stores an incredible amount of information.
But this information needs a way to get in an out. Nerves provide a pathway for this information to travel
and the spinal cord is made up of bundles of these, is protected by the spine. Nerve dysfunction can result
from any number of factors, such as falls, accidents, stress, tension and overuse. These events can alter our
"wiring" and create pain or discomfort in our bodies.
Doctors of chiropractic medicine are trained to locate the source of pain and discomfort, and it may actually
be far from where the symptoms are occurring. The doctor then corrects or adjusts the joints in the body
and sets it up to heal on its own. The type of correction or adjustment employed by the doctor depends on
the condition being treated and the proven, trusted methods to make them. The important thing to
remember is that success occurs by addressing the source of the problem, not by masking the symptoms.
By making the right choices, one can live a life full of wellness and vitality.
Can Chiropractic Help Me? People have been turning to chiropractic health care for over a
century. They have sought treatment for a wide variety of ailments, from headaches to foot pain and all in
between. Below are some situations where chiropractic is an apt, effective and beneficial health care
choice:
* You've had a little (or big) accident. Trauma can cause mild to severe spinal discomfort, and in
some cases chronic pain. We can evaluate your condition, provide effective treatment, and help prevent and
future or long-term damage.
* Too much touch football or a very demanding boss. Repetitive stress or overuse at work or play
may cause spinal nerves to be hampered. This may affect range of motion, strength, reflexes, endurance
and even performance. Chiropractic care can help restore normal function and get your back on top of your
game or career.
* Groan - you just hurt. Interference of proper nerve flow, for whatever reason, might eventually lead
to pain, disability and an overall decrease in your quality of life. You don't need to keep living with it. We
can help determine the cause, and provide safe and effective treatment to lessen or eliminate discomfort.
* You're expecting! The additional weight and stress on the framework of the body during pregnancy
can cause pain in almost any part of the body. Because pregnant women are often reluctant to take any
over-the-counter or prescription pain relief, they often turn to chiropractic care to help alleviate the pains
associated with pregnancy.
* Young adults. Teenagers' bodies are growing at a rapid rate. Regular visits to your chiropractic doctor
will help provide your teenager with a body that is structurally and functionally sound, and a will give them
a head start on a life of good health.
* The old bod just isn't what it used to be . There are various and diverse physical conditions
associated with aging, and drugs or surgery are often prescribed for these problems. There is little, if any,
attention paid to actually fixing these problems - and little to no importance placed on preventing them.
Chiropractors understand the effects of aging and have been helping people deal with the aches and pains
that come with aging for decades. As with every patient, we will examine you and diagnose your ailment,
determine what's causing it, and will choose gentle, therapeutic techniques to alleviate it.
* You feel great! You get regular checkups for your teeth, your kids and your car, right? Regular
chiropractic checkups and care can help detect and prevent spinal stress or joint disorders.
Chiropractic is a smart choice for most everyone. You'll stay healthier longer, and the time and energy you save can be better spent on the things you enjoy most!

Dr. D.D. Palmer, the founding
father of chiropractic, performed his
first adjustment in 1895. He
developed a theory that spinal
misalignment caused nerve pressure
or irritation which in turn caused
various ailments. He realized the
structure and condition of the body
influenced how the body functioned
and its ability to self-heal. This
simple philosophy has healed people
and prevented unwanted injury and
illness for over a century.
